Sleep Deprivation Can Cause Serious Physical and Mental Side Effects

Going without sleep for extended periods of time can have dramatic effects on one’s ability to function. Indeed in just two or three days without any sleep whatsoever, test subjects have been shown to begin hallucinating and they lose the ability to function normally. Getting any amount of sleep can prevent these most severe effects of sleep deprivation, but there are still significant effects from getting too little sleep on a consistent basis.

If a person has trouble sleeping a full seven or eight hours each night, either because they are facing some stressful situation which keeps them awake or because they can’t get comfortable on their old mattress, they build up a sleep debt. In other words, the effects of the lost sleep each night are cumulative over time. Insufficient sleep over a protracted period of time can cause physical problems as well as mental problems.

Studies show that people who regularly manage less than 7 hours of sleep each night, are less able to concentrate and focus on a problems either at work or at school. They may also become irritable and short-tempered. Lack of sleep can interfere with learning and memory as well. Sleep is a critical to help turn the events of the day into solid long-term memories.

Physically, lack of sleep takes a toll as well. An increased risk of heart disease has been shown to be associated with a chronic lack of a full night’s sleep. The immune system is also depressed by a lack of sleep. One recent study showed an overall increase in the rate of death from any cause in a group of subjects who reported getting less than 7 hours of sleep each night when compared to a group that slept for seven or eight hours on a regular basis.

Sometimes, getting a good night’s sleep can be as simple as making sure that the bedroom is quiet and dark, and that one has a comfortable mattress. Being physically uncomfortable can lead to tossing and turning and a fitful sleep. The quality of sleep has been shown to important. If sleep is frequently interrupted by awakening then it is far less beneficial than periods of continuous sleep. If one finds themselves frequently waking up in the middle of the night with sore shoulders or an aching back resulting from inadequate support or a mattress that is too firm, then the solution may be as easy as buying a new, more comfortable mattress. Whether it is a good conventional mattress or a memory foam mattress, the extra comfort may be the difference one needs to sleep through the night without a problem.

Not only will sleeping through the night for seven or eight hours help avoid the problems discussed above, but it will also help one to have more energy with which to face the day.
